Stoneyfield Farms has given me a great opportunity to review their new line of organic yogurts called “YoBaby”!
My wife and I have always tried to give our kids the healthiest foods we can within our budgets. As with all parents we want to make sure our children get all the proper nutrients they need to grow up healthy and strong. So we read many parenting books and they all said this was especially critical in the earlier stages when the brain, vital organs and immune system are developing.
So why Organic baby food? What’s the benefits over normal baby food?
This was my first question when I first heard about this product. What is the difference? Normal baby food is packed with all the necessary nutrients right? So I started researching organic foods and specifically around children and development. What I found is it is more about what it does not do. Organic foods (like YoBaby) are made without the use of antibiotics, hormones or pesticides. Why is this important? (Now I’m not a doctor, but this is what my research found when looking at reputable sites such as the Oxford Journals, WebMD etc..)
Antibiotics: If you introduce too many antibiotics to your system when not needed you can build up a resistance to them making them less effective.
Hormones: Some hormones can have an adverse affect on sexual production development especially in girls causing early menstruation. Some believe can increase cancer risks (but doesn’t everything now a days)
Pesticides: Studies have shown that pesticides can have an adverse affect organ and brain development.
Ok, so am I saying that everyone who feeds their children non organic food are bad parents? Not at all. Just saying that organic baby food sounds like it could reduce some health concerns associated with these potential additives. I wouldn’t go throwing away all the baby food you have and go storming to the grocery store to wipe the shelves out of Yo Baby (although Stoneyfield would love that!).
What about the cost?
The other big question I had going into this. I’ve seen the price tags on some of the organic offerings out there so I was a little nervous when I went to pick up the product to test. However I was pleasantly surprised! I went to my local Super Target and for a 6 pack of Yo Baby it was priced comparable to the Whips line from Yoplait and the same size. This is just a tad higher than the normal Yoplait or Dannon yogurt cost! Not the 300% mark up you see for a lot of organic products.
My conclusion:
With the health benefits and the small price difference definitely warrants giving this product a try. Bring some home next time you go to the grocery store and give it a shot. Your kids just may thank you later.
