Prom Tuxedo – Purchase For Less Than Renting!!
Well promo season is here. In fact, we just took our first kid to a tux rental store yesterday to rent a tux for his junior prom. Imagine the stunned look on my face when the clerk at the tux shop told me a rental cost $253.29…. for an outfit that he is going to wear for a couple of hours….that he doesn’t even get to keep!! Imagine my surprise.
So Junior and I left the store because I could not bring myself to spend that amount of money on a rental. However, he still needed a tux so off I started on my search to find a more frugal option.
I thought about it, and I figured that Junior would wear a tux at least 3 times within the next year. This prom, senior prom, and his summa cum laude awards ceremony next year. That would be nearly $760 for 3 tux rentals for those events.
First, I looked for tuxedos at Macy’s. I was pleasantly surprised. We found a Kenneth Cole Reaction, Slim fit (Junior wanted a slim fit tux so he is getting EXACTLY what he wanted) tux on sale for $159.99. Oh and of course you can use Macy’s promo codes to save even more. In my case, I got an additional 20% off. Now this price is for the jacket and the pants and after my coupon my price was $128.99 shipped. We found some shoes after sale and coupon for $55.99, regularly $89.99.
We still need a tie, shirt, and cuff links, of course, but he can borrow his dad’s cuff links. For these items, I headed to JCPenney.
First, I will tell you that JCPenny also has some fine looking tuxedos starting at $90! However, my son is 6’7″ so we had to go with the place that had a tux in his size…JCPenney did have shirt set that included a tuxedo shirt, cummerbund, and cuff links for only $44.99. Of course, you can use a JCPenney promo code too. However, my purchase didn’t qualify for the coupons that are now available.
So here’s the run down.
Tuxedo jacket and pants – $128.99
Shoes – $55.99
Shirt, tie, cuff links – $44.99
Final total = $229.97
As you can see, we purchased a tuxedo for less than the price of a one night rental. So as your are getting ready for prom, don’t think that purchasing a tux is out of the realm of possibilities. It was certainly cheaper in our situation.
The price of $229.97 is still a great deal of money. However, I don’t feel that it’s such a waste. He can certainly wear the shoes more than once and he can wear the tux to at least his two other occasions next year. Therefore, the price is about $77 per wear for all it instead of $253.29 and we get to keep it!!
