Your Life in Comics: 100 things for Guys to Write and Draw by Bill Zimmerman
The gist of it:
What’s more fun for tween guys than reading comics? Making their own. Your Life in Comics lets boys ages 9–13 do just that.
Rather than provide the story, this interactive book for guys allows them to decide what happens by using words and drawings of their creation. Some of the activities include completed comics where boys can dictate what happens through dialogue. Others encourage them to draw comic strips. Freestyle activities let guys personalize the book in fun ways.
Based on Free Spirit favorite 100 Things Guys Need to Know, this do-it-yourself comic book will get boys thinking about important topics in their lives, including family, friends, school, health, and the future.ut
Features of the book include:
* High-interest graphic-novel-style illustrations
* Fun writing and drawing activities that can engage for hours
* Exercises and prompts that let guys explore thoughts and attitudes
* Chronicling of tween years that can become a treasured keepsake
* Web extensions pointing the way to fun, interactive online resources
Comics, boy books, and graphic novels for reluctant readers have helped parents and educators engage more tween guys in reading. Your Life in Comics does this and goes a step further, providing boys with a forum for thinking about what’s important to them and celebrating who they are.
My Thoughts:
One of the things I love most about my 12 year old son, Ethan, is his humor. He keeps me laughing. Before Ethan could even read, he was attracted to the comic section of the newspaper. Now that he is a pre-teen, his interest
in comics have grown.
Reading is not Ethan’s most favorite thing in the world unless it is comic books. Author, Bill Zimmerman, does a great job stimulating the mind of a young boy. The thing I like most about Your Life in Comics, is it gives Ethan a chance to not only express himself but, it gives him a way to open up about the things that are going on in his life.
Ethan especially likes the practical joke section of the book!
