Last month, Kenmore asked me to talk about my biggest design challenge. My challenge was household design, or more specifically filling up some blank wall space in my house without blowing the budget. Check out my full post on my Biggest Household Challenge for all the details…!

As you can see, our dining room walls look pretty bland (picture below). Just white walls and a buffet. My wife and I have been debating for some time on how to dress this wall up. Sure, there are tons of options out there but we didn’t want to spend a fortune on art and home decorating.
Our genius tip…
Well, we have several ideas or tips that revolve around one theme… photography. You don’t have to be a professional photographer with expensive equipment to take a good photo. A simple point and shoot camera can very well do the trick! If you like flowers, take photos of flowers in your neighborhood, print them, put them in like frames and tada…you have yourself some one-of-a-kind art!!
I will say, my wife is the photographer in the family and her favorite subject is our children. She wanted to take nice photos of the kids and make those photos into art to go over our buffet. Sandy feels the best lighting is natural lighting so she and the kids set out for a nature walk/photo shoot. That morning she took over 300 photos of the children. Now we had the task of choosing which photos we wanted to showcase and how.
Sandy and I both get the daily Groupon emails. Groupon negotiates discounts from businesses of at least 50% and passes those savings on to you. She came across a really good Groupon for canvas photos. The Groupon for this particular deal was $45 for a 16×20 gallery wrapped canvas photo. She bought 4. There are many companies out there that offer photo canvases. This was the first time we used Canvas on Demand and I have to say, I am very, very pleased with the outcome. They did a great job on our gallery wrapped works of art. Uploading the images was a breeze and in a few weeks we had very professional looking, gallery wrapped photos on canvas. A product worthy of hanging in the dining area. Some people claim you shouldn’t display family photos in common areas but I always say, “my house, my rules”. What do you think?
Our dinning room has a whole new look. We will finish it off by adding a tall green plant in the corner and a beverage set atop the buffet.
There are also sites such as PhotoFiddle.com that allows you to totally distort your photo into a really unique piece of art. This piece is in our home office and is one of my favorites.
Sandy had another great idea (don’t tell her I said that) but she suggested allowing your children to go on a nature walk with a camera. You would be surprised with what the little Ansel Adams in training come up with. Then simply frame their work and hang. The children will be gleaming with pride and it also offers a budget friendly solution to home decorating.
So that’s it. That’s my budget friendly genius tip on home decorating. For $200 we went from having a drab sad dining room to one that we can really be proud to call ours!
