Walgreens 101

Walgreens 101

Shopping at Walgreens can save you tons of money $$$ but, it can be a little complicated. Just follow these suggestions and you will be on your way to saving big with ease!

My wife and I shop at Walgreens (and CVS) just about every week to take advantage of the the best deals. By following the system below,  we have been able to get most of our GM/HBC products for free. Items such as: toothpaste, lotions, shampoo and conditioner, razors etc….we haven’t paid for in years (or very little….like pennies).

Types of Coupons:

Walgreens has 3 types of coupons

WEEKLY AD- These are coupons found in the weekly circular.

WALGREENS EASY SAVER- This is a catalog that is found in the front of the store. Within this catalog they have Instant Value Coupons (IVC). The IVC can be combined with a manufacturers coupons.

REGISTER REWARDS – (RR) – are manufacturer coupons that print out when your transaction is complete. They are coupons that are used on your next purchase.

The best thing… you can use the Walgreens coupons with manufacture’s coupons. This is called stacking. This is how you save big…

Coupon Order:

This is the best order to present your coupons to the cashier.

  • Manufacturer’s Coupons
  • IVC’s
  • Walgreens Weekly Ad Coupons
  • Register Rewards

Walgreens Coupon Policy:

Here is Walgreens coupon policy, I recommend that you print this out and keep it with you in case any questions arise.

The tricky part:
Walgreens will not let you have more coupons than items purchased. For example, you can’t have 1 item with 2 coupons so you may have to buy something cheap like a piece of those yummy caramel candies they have at register or something else small.

The idea:
The idea is to use RR to buy other items that offer RR. That way you are never really spending your $. Also, you are going to stack coupons with the RR.

Example:
Carmex hand lotion in on sale for $4.99. There is a RR offer for $4. I also have a $1 off 1 Carmex product coupon.
$4.99 minus the $1 coupon, I pay $3.99 for the Carmex then a $4 RR prints at the end of my transaction. Now I have $4 to spend on my next visit.

Next visit-
John Frieda Haircare is on sale for 3 for $15, Get $5 Register Reward when you buy 3.
Use $3 off 1 coupon from the Sunday paper. Since you are a smart shopper, you are going to have more than 1 coupon, so you are also going to us the $2.50 off 1 printable coupon you got from Coupon Dad :) and the $2 off 1 coupon that was also in the Sunday paper.
3 shampoos for $15. You have $7.50 in coupons making your total $7.50. Plus you are going to use the $4RR you got from the last visit making your total $3.50. Remember, you have 3 items and 4 coupons so you are going to have to buy a small item to use all 4 coupons (perfect chance to get a caramel candy)!
Final=
3 shampoos for $3.50 making it about $1.17 per shampoo plus, you have $5 in RR to spend next time.

You can run these deals multiple times you just have to do them on separate transactions or visits.

* Note: Register Rewards you have earned from an offer can not be used to do the same offer again. So from the example above you can’t use the $5 RR you got from the John Frieda deal to pay for the same deal again on another transaction.

Conclusion:
I recommend buying one item at a time that offers RR until you get the hang of it. One thing to remember about Walgreens is, you have to purchase the products exactly as indicated in the ad. For example, it the ad says 4.5 ounces and you buy the 5 ounce bottle, the RR will not print!!! Also, remember you can’t have more coupons than items.

Another watch out is the register rewards do expire….so make sure to keep an eye on those dates! I can’t even count the amount of RR’s I have let expire on accident…..it’s like throwing money away so be careful.

Follow our weekly Walgreens coupon match ups where we show you the deals available that week. We highlight all deals where you can stack coupons with a sales price and/or register rewards, but really pay attention to the ones where you can get FREE items. Or simply subscribe to our daily email to keep up with all the coupons and match ups! We highly recommend this as many of the best coupons go very quick so you will want to be notified at least daily of any new ones coming out. The top of the daily email has a recap of the posts so you can quickly scan for the ones you want!

With these tips, it won’t be long until you will be saving big at Walgreens….and as always if you have questions feel free to ask! We love to help people save.
