Shopkins – Why Are They So Popular?
What toy was released in the year 2014 and in only a year surpassed Barbie, Lego and even Disney Princess in sales? Shopkins. These cute and tiny toys have won Toy of the Year Award in 2015 and have made 65 million dollars worldwide as of February 2015. But what are Shopkins and why are they so popular?
What Are They?
Shopkins are miniature toys that resemble everyday items but with cute faces. Shopkins come in a variety of products from fruits and vegetables to game consoles and lipstick. These small toys make it easy for any child to collect, play and trade. Shopkins are most likely the first “collect them all” toy marketed to girls. We all remember back in the 90’s when Pokemon hit the markets and the slogan “Gotta Catch ’em All” could be found everywhere. Though Pokemon was and still is popular, it still advertised more to boys then it did to girls. In 2016, the Pokemon slogan has been replaced with Shopkins “Once you shop, you can’t stop “. Even though Shopkins comes from an Austiralian company, producers did say they were inspired by Japanese minimalism. This clever idea makes it easy for kids to collect, store away, and bring to school and as other toy companies do they use the power of science to help sell their product. Each Shopkin has wide bright eyes and tiny smiles to try and give kids brains the same stimulus they get when looking at cute puppies.
Why Are They So Popular?
Now, why do kids love Shopkins? At first look they just seem to be strange plastic toys with glitter thrown on it, but to kids, each Shopkin has a name and personality. Yes, Moose Toy’s went through the trouble of giving each little Shopkin its own name and personality that can be found on a sheet that comes with the toys. These handy sheets not only tell you what Shopkin you have but also what Shopkins you don’t have so you can keep hunting and completing your child’s collection.
Why You Should Like Them?
What are the benefits to your child having Shopkins? Many moms reported their children having improved memory skills from recalling more then 550 different Shopkin personas. This could benefit them as they group older and need to remember the elements on the periodic table. Since Shopkins are so popular its very easy for girls of different ages to find something they have in common with, so making new friends or strengthening their current friendships become fun and easy. Also the varying prices of Shopkins from $4 pack to a $30 collection makes it great for any type of gift for your child, from a treat for behaving at the store to a lavish birthday present. But the most important benefit to having Shopkins is the creative play and imagination it generates in children. Creative play is the best way for your child to grow and develop behaviors and social skills they need for adulthood.
Theres a reason why Shopkins is becoming the worlds most popular toy. And with a true collectability of Shopkins gives them value to hold overtime. This simple toy is defiantly worth investing in whether your a true collector or looking for your child next best friend.
